The Octoechos

Translated from Church Slavonic by
Monk Joseph (Isaac) Lambertsen

  • The Octoechos, composed by Saint John of Damascus after his severed hand was healed by a miracle of the Most Holy Theotokos, contains hymns for the daily offices of the Church (Vespers, Compline, Midnight Office, and Matins) for each day of the week, arranged in an eight week cycle.

Damascene Press is preparing to publish The Octoechos in large print (kliros) and personal reference editions. Both editions are expected to be printed in red and black and bound in genuine leather. A release date will be announced in early 2026.

  • Giving thanks to God and inspired by the successful funding by benefactors large and small of the publication of A Spiritual Psalter or Reflections on God, Damascene Press is appealing to lovers of the Church’s divine services to participate in bringing The Octoechos to press in 2026, in both large-print and personal editions. In addition to reserving one or both editions of The Octoechos, Benefactors will receive some combination of the Benefactors (leather-bound) and hardbound editions of A Spiritual Psalter. All Benefactors will periodically receive bookmarks with selections from The Octoechos and corresponding iconography.
