Prayers to the Holy Basil, Fool for Christ's Sake, Wonderworker of Moscow

Icon of Saint Basil, the Fool for Christ

Prayer I

O great favorite of Christ, true friend and faithful servant of the Lord God, the Creator of all, all-blessed Basil! Hearken unto us, the greatly sinful who now cry out to thee and call upon thy holy name. Have mercy upon us, who today fall down before thy precious icon [or the shrine of thy relics]. Accept this, our meager and unworthy entreaty. Have pity on our wretchedness, and by thy supplications heal the every ailment and sickness of our sinful soul and body; and vouchsafe that we may travel the course of this life unharmed by enemies, visible and invisible, and may receive a Christian end unashamed, peaceful, untroubled, and the inheritance of the kingdom of heaven with all the saints, unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer II

O all-blessed Basil, ascending to the summit of the virtues thou didst draw closer to God; shining forth in thy way of life like an all-radiant star thou didst illumine our whole land; forsaking the love of thy parents thou didst love the one God Who is glorified in Trinity; and following Him with steadfast desire, and choosing the way of foolishness spoken of by the Apostle, thou didst hold all the beautiful things of this world to be as naught. Wherefore, we beseech thee, O all-blessed Basil: Pray to the Master, Christ our God, and entreat Him, that by thy supplications He grant us health and salvation, and victory over all the nations who would make war upon us. For our hierarchy and spiritual authorities — the Most Sacred Council of Bishops, our First Hierarch, all archbishops and bishops, archimandrites and abbots, and all the sanctified ranks of monastics — ask health of soul and body. For our capital city, this city [or town, or village] [and this holy monastery, or convent], beg steadfastness. And for the whole world ask peace. Furthermore, by thine entreaties preserve our faith immaculate, deliver us from famine and destruction, and protect us from the assaults of our enemies. Comfort the elderly, instruct our youth, impart wisdom to the mindless, have mercy on the widows and orphans, nurture our infants, and keep these people, who cherish thy holy memory, from all misfortunes and dangers. And vouchsafe that on the day of judgment we sinners may stand at the right hand of the Son of God, through thy holy supplications to the Savior and His all-holy Mother, our all-blessed Mistress, the Theotokos, who is called blessèd by all generations, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
