Prayers to the Holy Apostle & Evangelist John the Theologian

Icon of St. John the Theologian

Prayer I

O great apostle, evangelist whose voice is like thunder, excellent theologian, beholder of the ineffable mysteries of revelation, virginal and beloved John, who didst lean upon the breast of Christ! Receive us sinners who hasten to thy mighty aid. Ask of Christ our God the most compassionate, Who loveth mankind, Who before thine own eyes shed His blood for us, His unprofitable servants, that He be not mindful of our iniquities, but have mercy on us and deal with us according to His mercy; that He grant us health of soul and body, all prosperity and plentitude, guiding us to turn these to the glory of Him, our Creator, Savior and God; and that after the end of our transitory life He deliver us from the unmerciful interrogators at the aerial way-stations, that, thus led and protected by thee, we may attain unto that heavenly Jerusalem whose glory thou didst behold in revelation, and the never-ending glory whereof thou dost now enjoy. O great John, preserve all cities and lands where Christians dwell, this temple [monastery] and those who serve and pray therein, from famine, pestilence, earthquake and flood, fire and the sword, foreign invasion and civil strife; deliver us from all misfortune and peril, and by thy supplications avert from us the righteous wrath of God; and beg for us His loving-kindness, that in the never-waning day we may be vouchsafed to glorify with thee the all-holy name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer II

O great and most lauded Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, our fervent helper and speedy aid amid tribulations, who didst lean upon the breast of Christ! Beseech the Lord God, that He grant us remission of all the transgressions we have committed from our youth and throughout our life, in deed, word, thought and by all our senses; and at the departure of our souls, help us sinners [N.N.], delivering us from the aerial way stations and from everlasting torment, that by thy merciful intercession we may glorify the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer III

O great and unapproachable God! Lo! we set before Thee to make entreaty the holy John, to whom Thou didst vouchsafe ineffable revelations. Accept his mediation for us; grant us the fulfillment of our petitions that redound to Thy glory, and even more, perfect us with spiritual perfection, for the enjoyment of everlasting life in Thy heavenly mansions. O heavenly Father Who hast created all things, almighty Master and King! Touch our hearts with grace, that, having melted like wax, we may be poured forth before Thee, that Thy creation of clay may be rendered spiritual, for the worship and glory of Thee, and Thy Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
