A Prayer of Repentance

L

ord, O Lord, behold, I stand before Thee like the prodigal son, confessing my sins to Thy goodness. I have sinned, O my Savior, I have sinned. For from my youth I have committed sin and defiled soul and body with wicked deeds. I have sinned against Thee like our first parents, Adam and Eve, breaking Thy commandments; I have sinned like Cain and like all the sinful people of the Old and New Testaments. I have darkened my mind with unseemly thoughts; I have filled my heart with impurity and every sinful sensation; I have weakened my will through slothfulness and inclination to sin. I am covered with the wounds of sin, like the man who fell among thieves; and all the wounds of my soul ooze with putridity. Who can heal me? Or who will raise me up from the depth of my sinful life, if not Thee, O gracious Physician? Wherefore, I have fled to Thee, O my King and my God, praying tearfully. Treat Thou and heal me. Purify my mind of useless thoughts; and free my heart of the impurity of sin, that with a pure heart and mind I may be able to glorify Thee, my Creator and God. Strengthen my will for good works, that I may do only those things that are pleasing to Thee and worthy of Thy holiness. Forgive me every offense, voluntary and involuntary, and all things done by me in knowledge and in ignorance. Thou art goodness itself, love itself, and hast the power to remit sins; and we send up glory to Thee, and to the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
